Note 12: Like several of the
most notable cartoonists and animators, Marc Davis came to Disney in the mid-1930s.
He had no special education in cartoons before that time, but showed talent for
sensitive interest drawing, which is why he became an interest draftsman on the
Snow White figure. Then he became a story sketch-man and character designer in "Bambi",
especially because he was good at drawing animals. His first task as a key
animator was to draw and animate the skunk Flower ("Blomst") and his
girlfriend.
Then Marc Davis returned to the story
department, where he designed the eagle and squid sequence in Victory Through
Air Power, animated by Bill Tytla. - Marc Davis also worked as an animator on
films such as Song of the South, Fun and Fancy Free ("Bongo and Mickey and
the Prayer Stage"), So Dear to My Heart, Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Cinderella
("Cinderella"), Alice in Wonderland ("Alice in
Wonderland"), and Peter Pan. In The Sleeping Beauty ("Sleeping
Beauty"), Marc Davis drew and animated the evil fairy, Malefice
("Malavia"). He later animated Cruella de Vil in One Hundred and One
Dalmatians ("Hund og hund imellem"). He also worked as a teacher of
character design and animation at Chouinard's Art Institute, and many of his
students later got the chance at Disney. When Disney created the
"Disneyland" theme parks in Anaheim, California, and "Disney World"
in Florida, Marc Davis became associated with these projects as a planner and
designer of various attractions or so-called "amusement rides."
